Florida Gators women’s tennis was bounced earlier than expected in the 2016 NCAA Tournament but that did not mean a national title was completely out of reach for the program.

Junior Kourtney Keegan and sophomore Brooke Austin picked up where their teammates left off, fighting all the way through the 2016 NCAA Doubles Tournament to capture the first doubles national title for Florida women’s tennis since 2001.

Ranked No. 3 entering the bracket, Keegan and Austin swept their first three rounds before meeting the duo of Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips from UCLA in the semifinals. The Gators’ team eventually prevailed with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5) victory, setting up a title match against Cal’s team of Meegan Manasse and Denise Starr.

Florida ran to the doubles title Monday behind a dominant 6-2, 6-0 victory, leading Keegan and Austin to bring the crown back to Gainesville, Florida, for the first time in 15 years. It is the Gators’ ninth individual title, fifth in doubles play.

Keegan and Austin also participated in the 2016 NCAA Singles Tournament but lost their opening-round matches. Junior Belinda Woolcock advanced the furthest of all Florida players, winning two matches before falling in the Round of 16.
