The Florida Gators on Wednesday nabbed one of the top prospects in the Class of 2022 when five-star athlete Sam McCall (Lakeland, FL) committed to the program. The nation’s No. 30 overall player, per the 247Sports Composite, is expected to play defensive back at the next level but is listed as an athlete because his skill set is vast.

McCall (6-foot, 180 pounds) committed to Florida over Alabama, Florida State and Oklahoma. He made his announcement on his birthday in a commitment video that included a FaceTime call with Gators head coach Dan Mullen, a cameo from former Florida safety Ahmad Black (also a Lakeland product) and some of “I Won’t Back Down” from Tom Petty.

Though he is just the second 2022 prospect to commit to the Gators, joining four-star wide receiver Syveion Ellis (Miami, FL), his pledge was such a big deal that it boosted Florida from No. 27 all the way up to No. 10 in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.

McCall is the third five-star prospect that Florida has plucked out of Polk County recently. Not only did Mullen get a commitment from defensive tackle Gervon Dexter ahead of the 2020 season, he also earned the transfer of running back Demarkcus Bowman last month.

McCall’s commitment continues a week of positive news for the Gators, which saw four-star linebacker Jeremiah Williams (Birmingham, AL) commit to the program on Monday and boost Florida’s 2021 class up to eighth in the nation.
