Report: Newton, father wanted “pay-for-play plan”

One week after ESPN reported that Cecil Newton, father of Auburn Tigers quarterback Cameron Newton, allegedly requested money for his son’s college commitment through a third party and one day after FOX Sports reported that the son was caught cheating three times while attending the University of Florida, sources told ESPN’s Joe Schad that the Newtons each “admitted in separate phone conversations to a pay-for-play plan while Newton was being recruited late last year.”

According to Schad’s sources, a Mississippi State Bulldogs recruiter was told by Cecil Newton that his son would only join the program if he received “more than a scholarship” for his services. The recruiter was then pointed to a third party who the father said could provide further details. The school failed to comply and Cameron Newton ended up at Auburn because, as the player supposedly explained another recruiter with great emotion, “the money was too much” for his dad to allow him to go to Mississippi State.

The alleged compliance offenses were related to the Southeastern Conference by Mississippi State in January, Schad reports.

The Newtons have previously denied all allegations of requesting or accepting money but refused to entertain the questions surrounding any cheating at Florida. “I’m not going to sit up here and say anything about it, whether I did or did not do it, because I don’t want to beat a dead horse talking about it,” Cameron Newton said in a press conference Tuesday. “It’s not going to affect me in any way, shape or fashion.”

The player has previously admitted that attending Auburn was his father’s choice as he had originally desired to play for former Florida Gators offensive coordinator Dan Mullen, now the Bulldogs’ head coach.

OK, is there really anything left to say. This $hit is getting ridiculous.

This new twist takes the cheating at UF into the shadows of what could be brewing into a serious situation.

What a mess for Auburn…they will more than likely keep LSU out of the SEC title game and the chance at a NC game when the chances are good the entire season could be forfeited!!!!

    Meyer must have leaked this.

It’s getting ridiculous, but more believable. When you’re in a bind for money, I guess crazy things happen. I wonder if UF has any skeletons from the Urban era…

I’m getting really sick of hearing about this. Just a bunch of wild allegations flying around. National news sources reporting this stuff off of hearsay is extremly irresponsible, not that it should surprise anyone these days. Where there’s smoke there’s probably fire, but these reporters either need to provide proof of the wrongdoing or shut the hell up.

By the way, don’t we have a game this weekend against South Carolina with a spot in the SEC Championship game on the line?

Come on now! Everyone knows that it was Urban Meyer disguising his voice as Cam’s father on those calls. Coach Meyer was never going to allow someone who left Florida end up winning the Heisman and the MNC! What kind of crap are some of our haters going to come up with next? If they only knew that the person who does the hating is harmed much more by the hating itself than the person that the hate is directed towards. Some of the unsubstantiated rumors are almost funny.

Until there is definitive evidence, I don’t care. I don’t care about the cheating from two years ago, when I was 18/19 years old I cheated on a term paper. Not that I’m proud of it, but young people sometimes do stupid things – its how you evolve, as you get older. And by most accounts it sounds like he did a lot of growing up since then. Two years ago should have no relevence on the current season. There has to be alot more to the story than what I’ve heard so far, which really amounts to rumors from unnamed sources, for the writers to give the heisman to someone else. If they award it to someone else just based on assumptions when this kid was clearly the best player, it would be a gross injustice.
