TWO BITS: Gators earn 26th commit, QB Murphy

1 » Two-star dual-threat quarterback/athlete Tyler Murphy (Wethersfield, CT) is the newest member of the Florida Gators unanimously ranked No. 1 2010 recruiting class. Courted by QB coach Scot Loeffler and interim head coach Steve Addazio, Murphy took an official visit to Gainesville, FL, this weekend and committed on the spot. Murphy was previously committed to the Temple Owls, but as soon as the Gators offered him, it became apparent that he would end up in the Orange & Blue. “It’s been very exciting,” he told ‘Mark Wheeler of Rivals. “Just to know where everything falls into place and that all the hard work pays off. It’s very exciting and I’m very happy to be able to come down [to Florida].”

»» Rivals is also reporting that the Gators and 2010 three-star tight end commitment Michael McFarland (Tampa, FL) have agreed to have him grayshirt the 2010 season and enroll with the 2011 recruiting class. McFarland was reluctant at first, out of pride, but realized that this move would benefit him in the long run. Grayshirts usually wait until the second semester to enroll in school instead of in the fall. This move would open up an additional scholarship for Florida to fill before National Signing Day on Feb. 3.

2 » Florida women’s basketball and No. 8 tennis were in action on Sunday, both taking home victories. Basketball (11-9, 4-3 SEC) defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks (10-9, 3-4 SEC) 59-56 while tennis swept the North Texas Mean Green 7-0. Senior forward Sharielle Smith led the Gators with 11 points while freshman F Jennifer George grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Urban Meyer will be fine as long as he doesn’t go back to the same stressful lifestyle that was slowly taking a toll on him. If he didn’t care as much about Florida football as he does, he wouldn’t have opted for the LOA to address his personal needs. He now has a staff around him that he can trust, especially when it comes to recruiting – and the #1 ranked class in the nation so far attests to that. He won’t cave in to Kiffin’s chicanery or allow himself to be fazed by all these asinine rumors floating around, but on the other hand he can’t afford to stress himself out or overdo anything after what happened last December.

That was a pretty good article by Staples, and was really food for thought that all of us can use. From time to time we all need a break from our usual routines, or we’d either burn out or collapse from overwork and stress.

You just know the kid excitedly pissed his pants when they offered. Guarantee you he’s STILL on cloud nine. When you go from Temple to UF your stars have aligned.

Congratulations “Murph.” Welcome to Gator Nation. The last guy to come through here named Murphy did okay for himself.

The coaching staff must have seen something in you that they liked very much. The remaining slots are highly coveted and not given out lightly.

I hope you make the most of the enormous opportunity you have just been granted. You are joining a special class Taylor.

    Chit…. Tyler!

I just don’t understand why we have been DESPERATELY looking for QB. Next year’s class of QB’s is pretty nice and we have Trey Burton. I think this proves that our staff has ansolutely no faith in Trey Burton at QB. I could understand going after Baxter and Hendrix who are much better prospects, but Murphy?? I have a friend who makes for a better prospect than him.

  5. SC Gator says:

Safe bet he doesn’t stay as a QB prospect for long.

I took a look at his vid the other day and was tremendously impressed with his athletic ability. Great runner, good passer, tremendous return man. One of his returns I saw took me right out of my seat and I’m sure it did the same to the coaches. I’m excited about this “under the radar” player!!

Could be that one of them will redshirt.

  8. TX Gator says:

If Johnny Brantley can have a break-out season in 2010 as a pure passer, UF can make the case to the big-time QB prospects, not slot WR’s and fullbacks posing as such, to come to UF.

If they eff around and try to make Brantley something he is not, UF will continue to be long-shots when it comes to getting the more elite QB prospects and WR’s taller than 5’9″. JB has 1st round potential as an actual QB who can step on the field and throw the ball not as a name to sell tickets.

I highly doubt Murphy stays a QB. I think highly of Brantley and think we are going to see a high flying Gators Offense this season with him behind Center.
