Former Florida Gators catcher David Ross, 39, has already decided to retire this year following his 15th MLB season. Here’s how he kicked off his farewell tour on Wednesday: by catching his first career no-hitter and smacking his first home run of the season in the same game.
Starting for the Chicago Cubs, Ross went 2/4 with a homer, RBI, three runs and a walk. He also led star pitcher Jake Arrieta to his second no-hitter in as many seasons. Arietta notched six strikeouts and four walks in the effort as the Cubs won 16-0 and improved to 12-4 on the season.
Ross was given a Gatorade shower after the game, and Arrieta in his post-game interview praised the catcher more than he took pleasure in the no-hit effort.
Chicago is Ross’ seventh MLB team. Wednesday marked his sixth game of the season. The 72 games he played for the Cubs in 2015 were his most since 2007.
