Seemingly recovered from a nagging injury, redshirt sophomore kicker Austin Hardin will start for the No. 11 Florida Gators on Saturday against the Georgia Bulldogs.
Florida announced as much Friday when releasing the name of the team’s new walk-on kicker.
Neil MacInnes, who participated in the Gators’ tryouts during the bye week, won the open competition and will dress on Saturday for Florida.
“It’s pretty much a dream come true,’’ MacInnes told UF’s website. “I wanted to kick in high school and obviously being part of this organization, and Gator Nation, is kind of cool.”
According to Florida, MacInnes was a kicker, soccer player and track athlete at Chamberlain High School in Tampa, Florida. The 21-year-old is a senior at UF and had not booted a ball through the uprights – until last week’s tryouts – since 2011.
MacInnes (6-foot-4, 219 pounds) beat out former Gators walk-on Dallas Stubbs and ex-Florida equipment staffer Donovan White for the job.
