Junior linebacker Jeremi Powell has decided to leave the Florida Gators with a year of eligibility remaining in order to pursue “a future outside of the game,” according to a release from the program.
Florida notes that Powell is set to graduate in May.
The Gators’ release, which did not include a statement from head coach Jim McElwain, confirmed multiple reports earlier Tuesday that had Powell not rejoining the team for the 2016 season.
All in all, Powell notched 21 tackles in 25 career games for Florida, spending most of his time playing on special teams. He did start two contests for the Gators this season as injuries and a lack of depth created a thin linebacking corps.
UF will return senior Alex Anzalone, junior Daniel McMillian, redshirt sophomore Matt Rolin and freshman Rayshad Jackson for next season; the Gators also hope to have junior Jarrad Davis – the best of the bunch – in the fold, though he appears to be weighing an NFL decision after initially saying he was definitely coming back to the team next year.
Florida will also have three-star early enrollee David Reese (Farmington, MI) on campus for spring practice, though the program does not have any other linebackers committed for 2016 at this time.
