The Florida Gators on Saturday added a verbal commitment from four-star 2020 linebacker Derek Wingo (Fort Lauderdale, FL). A former Penn State commitment, Wingo decommitted from the Nittany Lions and immediately pledged to the Gators.
He is the second four-star prospect that Florida has flipped in as many days after 2020 defensive tackle Lamar Goods (Oakdale, CT) jettisoned his pledge to Kentucky on Friday.
Wingo (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) is ranked No. 165 overall in the Class off 2020 and is now the third-highest rated Gators commitment. As such, he pushed Florida up the 247Sports Composite team rankings to No. 7 in the nation, fourth in the SEC and now ahead of Miami.
“I would like to officially shut down my recruitment and announce that I’m 100% committed to the University of Florida,” Wingo wrote in a Twitter graphic explaining his decision.
Earlier Saturday, three-star defensive back Tre’Vez Johnson (Jacksonville, FL) committed to Florida. Johnson (5-foot-11, 175 pounds) is the program’s lowest-rated pledge at this time.
Here’s a look at the latest recruiting news from the Gators as updated by OnlyGators.com after Johnson’s commitment on Saturday.
