TWO BITS: Weis high on Brissett; surgeries

1 » Friday marked new Florida Gators offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Charlie Weis’s first day on the job, and he spent it in West Palm Beach, FL trying to recruit four-stars quarterback Jacoby Brissett and linebacker Curt Maggitt of Dwyer High School. Former Florida head coach Urban Meyer had previously offered Brissett the opportunity to greyshirt, but a visit by Weis followed by a phone call to new head coach Will Muschamp after the meeting netted Brissett an official scholarship offer on Friday. Maggitt already had an outstanding offer to join the Gators.

Dwyer head coach Jack Daniels told the Palm Beach Post that Weis showcased one of his Super Bowl rings and told “a ton of stories about what he’s done and situations he’s handled.” Brisset will take an unofficial visit to Gainesville, FL over the weekend to get a look at the school and watch the Florida-South Carolina basketball game (a former schoolmate plays for USC). The Gators hope to convince both Brissett and Maggitt to take an official visit to Florida before the recruiting cycle closes. [Read more of what Daniels had to say from the Post.

With Gators freshman QB Trey Burton expected to move to the defensive side of the ball (possibly safety), Florida would have five quarterbacks on its roster should Brissett commit. Redshirt junior John Brantley announced he is not transferring, five-star frosh Jeff Driskel (Oviedo, FL) is already enrolled, and both redshirt freshman Jordan Reed and freshman Tyler Murphy are currently listed as QBs. Reed is also a tight end and could permanently switch to that position, and Murphy could theoretically change positions as well though he has come out and said he only wants to play quarterback.

2 » Muschamp announced Friday that freshman LB Neiron Ball and redshirt sophomore guard David Young both underwent surgery this past week. Ball, who played in all of Florida’s contests on special teams in 2010, had surgery to repair a sports hernia. Young had hardware cleaned out of his left knee from a prior surgery and only participated in two games this past season. Expectations are that Ball will be able to get work in during spring practice, but Young will most likely have to wait until the summer.

…..”Dwyer head coach Jack Daniels told the Palm Beach Post that Weis showcased one of his Super Bowl rings”…….

NiceCoach Weis!!!! He really don’t need to say a thing when he walks into a recruits house, just flash those 4 pieces of jewelery and the kid will be like putty in his hands

  2. Gatorbuc15 says:

Charlie is certainly hitting the ground running recruiting.

  4. Bob Mack says:

Good luck to Will, Charlie &
    all We’re counting on you

  5. DC Gator says:

The fact that Weis is still looking to sign another QB in this class is revealing. I think Reed switching positions is all but certain at this point.

  6. SaraGator says:

Did Trey play safety in high school?

  7. Gatorgrad79 says:

Adam, to your knowledge, are there any highly prized recruits that we were pursuing who made verbals elsewhere, that Weis and company might turn around before signing day?

  8. joey says:

I think we have more coaches with SB rings then without

  9. David says:

I think I saw that Omar Hunter had surgery on Thursday or yesterday. Anyone know anything about the scope of the surgery and length of recovery?

  10. Basshole says:

Just for the record, Adam, would “First!” be a “contributing” comment? 🙂

  11. rico says:

in the article you said 5 QB does that mean reed is back at QB full time or O and B will be when the coaches decide

    • Current QBs: Brantley, Burton, Reed, Murphy, Driskel (5)
Burton is expected to be on defense (4)
      If they sign Brissett (5)
Therefore you need two of the other guys to change positions (or transfer)…which could be Reed back to full-time TE or Murphy to WR, for example.

  12. DGLgatorfan says:

I Think Murphy might transfer eventually said he wants to be a qb here and its looking like that won’t happen. Burton as a safety or cb seem like it will be a good move

  13. g8ter27 says:

So any new word on Jenkins staying or going now?

  14. Mr2Bits says:

Well the basketball team is looking like crap! Down 13 nearing half. This team seems to have problems stringing together wins for some reason.

  15. David says:

Adam, do you know where Verduci is? I haven’t heard of him recruiting or anything. Thanks!

  16. David says:

    Thanks Adam!

  17. Mr2Bits says:

I think Shaq has a better shot at the free throw line than our team……just painful!

  18. g8ter27 says:

Thats our bball team. Typical, losing at home again to an average team.

  19. Gatorgrad79 says:

Seems to be a recurring rumor that Murphy will transfer if he cannot play QB, so I would think if we signed Brissett, that would seal his decision…?

  20. Mr2Bits says:

Looks like Brissett and Weis got along so well, Brissett came back to Gainesville with Weis for todays basketball game. Too bad we couldn’t pull out the win but the place was electric and people were taking photos like crazy……gotta love it.

  21. zurbo says:

    good news thus far!

  22. Mr2Bits says:

Oh and Adam. I like the new ESPN the tres link on the side. They a new sponsor? Informative and clean….nice work!

  23. Swampbabe says:

I didn’t get a ral warm and fuzzy for Brissett coming based on what his coach said. And you gotta think with Driskel and Brantley the guy’s gonna question how long he might have to sit. Hope the SC game wasn’t an indication of how our weekend is going to go with recruits. Would love to come out with a firm committment from Story at the very least.

  24. Drew 4 Orange & Blue says:

Burton at safety is interesting….who else is recruting Brissett and I assume he is a pro-style QB?

  25. Gatorgrad79 says:

If JB tanks in the new offense, Reed moves to the other side of the ball, Murphy transfers, and Driskell comes on strong, all of a sudden Brissett is No 2…
