Super Bowl 2024: Tommy Townsend among four Florida Gators to win rings with Kansas City Chiefs

Capping another tremendous season for Florida Gators in the NFL, four former players won championship rings Sunday night as the Kansas City Chiefs completed a come-from-behind 25-22 overtime win against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII. While quarterback Patrick Mahomes emerged as the Super Bowl MVP — for the second straight season — following a stellar performance for Kansas City, three Florida players were active for the game with another a healthy inactive.

Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend was the most notable contributor with five boots for 254 yards, including a long of 62 yards and two downed inside the 49ers 20-yard line. Not only that, he had an expert hold on a Super Bowl-record 57-yard field goal off the boot of Harrison Butker.

Offensive lineman Jawaan Taylor also started at right tackle and did not commit a penalty in the game despite having a false start problem this season. Meanwhile, wide receiver Kadarius Toney and running back La’Mical Perine were both inactive for the game. Though Toney caught a 5-yard touchdown pass and set a Super Bowl record with a 65-yard punt return in last year’s big game, his propensity for drops and mental errors led to him being a healthy scratch. (Perine did not play much for K.C. this season.)

This marks the second-straight Super Bowl rings for Townsend and Toney, who both won with the Chiefs last season.

Sunday marked the 13th time in 15 seasons that a Florida player won a Super Bowl ring. It was also 22nd consecutive year in which at least one player was rostered on a team in the big game. Overall, UF has now won 43 total rings by 34 players across 26 Super Bowls.

There were no Gators on the Niners’ roster. Florida safety Trey Dean was a member of Kansas City’s practice squad.
