The Florida Gators’ Class of 2021 has received a boost over the last couple of weeks, adding three new verbal commitments to push it to a No. 2 overall national rank. Chief among them was four-star tight end Gage Wilcox (Tampa, FL), who gave his pledge to the program on Feb. 28.
Wilcox (6-foot-4, 228 pounds) is rated as the No. 11 player at his position nationally and No. 248 overall prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite. He was a highly sought after recruit with offers from most of the top programs in the South.
Two days earlier, three-star defensive end Justus Boone (Sumter, SC) announced his commitment to UF. Boone (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) did not have as deep an offer sheet as Wilcox was but nonetheless coveted at his position by a number of SEC teams like Tennessee.
Florida doubled up at the tight end position Saturday when three-star Nick Elksnis (Jacksonville, FL) committed to the Gators while attending the team’s Junior Day. This came just six days after Elksnis (6-foot-6, 220 pounds) decommitted from Penn State and marks the second major get by new Florida tight end coach Tim Brewster.
With 14 verbal commitments in tow and no five-star pledges, the Gators’ class is now ranked No. 2 nationally and less than three points behind Ohio State, which has two five-star commits.
Florida’s average prospect rating is not overly high with eight four-stars and six three-stars in the class, but there is plenty of time to go and a number of big fish the Gators are attempting to reel in over the next 10 months before the early signing period.
