New head coach Todd Golden has hit the transfer portal hard after just weeks on the job with the Florida Gators landing their third such player to fill out their roster. VMI point guard Trey Bonham became that third player when he committed to join Florida on Monday.

“Beat the odds and remained humble #COMMITTED,” Bonham tweeted with a picture of him dressed in a Gators uniform.

Bonham (6-foot, 170 pounds) spent two seasons with the Keydets where he averaged 13.6 points, 4.0 assists and 4.4 rebounds while starting all 29 of the games he played for VMI across the 2021-22 campaign. As a sophomore last season, he was named to the All-Southern Conference first team.

His commitment to join UF came less than an hour after Bradley PG Trey Roberts, another Florida target, committed to Georgia on Monday.

With Bonham now in tow and slotting in as the team’s starting floor general, the Gators have replaced their three known departures with as many transfers. Four-stars forward Alex Fudge (LSU) and guard Will Richard (Belmont) previously committed to Florida. They are listed as the No. 29 and No. 32 prospects, respectively, in the 247Sports transfer rankings. Bonham is not listed in the rankings.

In addition to the three notable transfers, the Gators have retained three key players from last year’s squad. Senior G Myreon Jones on Sunday became third Florida player that Golden essentially re-recruited. Senior F Colin Castleton is also using his extra year of eligibility to remain with the program, and freshman G Kowacie Reeves decided to stay with the Gators after flirting with an entry into the transfer portal.

Senior F Anthony Duruji is pursuing a professional career, while senior PG Tyree Appleby and junior F Tuongthach Gatkek both entered the portal without considering a return to Florida.
