Recruiting has been … slow … for the Florida Gators. Despite holding a couple high-profile events on campus, Florida has not seen a number of prospects pull the trigger just yet as many are likely to seeing what kind of product new Gators head coach Dan Mullen puts on the field in 2018.
One player who did not need any additional time is four-star defensive tackle Jaelin Humphries (Lawrenceville, GA), who made a verbal commitment to the program Monday. The nation’s 201st-ranked recruit immediately becomes Florida’s top prospect, one who chose UF over Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, LSU and Miami, among many others.
While Humphries (6-foot-3, 303 pounds) is the ninth recruit to commit to Mullen in the Class of 2019, he’s only the Gators’ third four-star prospect at this time, none of whom are in-state players. He’s also the first defensive lineman in the class, which is a position of need for Florida this cycle.
The Gators’ class is now ranked 23rd nationally and 10th in the SEC, per the 247Sports Composite.
Momentum was built over the weekend in Florida’s pursuit of the No. 39 player in the nation, four-star cornerback Chris Steele (Bellflower, CA), who is primarily considering UF and USC. Steele is expected to make a commitment in early July. The Gators are also all-in on five-star running back Trey Sanders (Bradenton, FL), the nation’s seventh-ranked prospect.
