Florida football recruiting: Gators add verbal from four-star DE Antwaun Powell

Another big swing and another big hit for the Florida Gators on the recruiting trail came Wednesday when head coach Dan Mullen and Co. landed a verbal commitment from four-star defensive end Antwaun Powell (Portsmouth, VA). One of the top players at his position nationally, Powell committed to Florida via Twitter.

“I feel [this is] the best decision for me and I’m excited to announce that I am 100% committed to the University of Florida,” he wrote.

Powell (6-foot-3, 234 pounds) is ranked No. 136 overall nationally, per the 247Sports Composite, and as the No. 6 player at his position. He committed to UF over offers from Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and North Carolina.

The Gators are in the process of putting together a solid Class of 2020 and are loading up on the defensive side of the ball with four of their top five pledges coming from the unit defensive coordinator Todd Grantham manages — three of them linemen. Powell, who was recruited by Grantham and defensive backs coach Torrian Gray, is currently the third-highest rated player in Florida’s class.

Powell is the second big-name player the Gators have added over the last handful of days following the commitment of four-star linebacker Derek Wingo (Fort Lauderdale, FL).

Florida had risen to No. 7 nationally earlier this week in the 247Sports Composite team rankings but has now jumped to No. 5 following the addition of Powell. The SEC now holds spots 2-4 in the team rankings behind Clemson with Alabama, LSU and Georgia ahead of Florida.
