It may sound is if the Florida Gators have been the walking wounded this season due to the constant negative news around the health of sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, but with Lagway was ultimately able to return to last week, it’s actually the wide receiving corps that needs to be the center of concern as the 2025 season approaches. Particularly given it’s the strongest group of pass catchers the Gators were expected to put on the field in recent memory.

Five-star feshman wide receiver Dallas Wilson, who showed out with a spectacular performance during the Orange & Blue Game this spring, reportedly suffered a lower-leg injury Wednesday in practice making him the latest Florida wideout unexpectedly sidelined. The specifics of Wilson’s injury and subsequent recovery timeline are not known at this juncture.

Redshirt sophomores Eugene Wilson III and Aidan Mizell — oft-injured during their Gators careers — and freshman Muizz Tounkara have all been sidelined since the start of fall camp. Redshirt senior Kahleil Jackson has yet to practice after undergoing knee surgery this summer to clean up an ACL repair from last fall.

That leaves redshirt senior transfer J. Michael Sturdivant, sophomore Tank Hawkins and a trio of freshman — five-star Vernell Brown III, TJ Abrams, Naeshaun Montgomery — as the players getting the most practice reps.

Redshirt sophomore running back Treyaun Webb on Monday underwent a surgical procedure that is expected to keep him out 4-6 weeks, a source confirmed to OnlyGators.com. It is Webb’s third surgery in the last calendar year but less serious than the two other times he went under the knife.

Webb impressed getting backup work at the start of the 2024 season only to fracture his tibia, an injury that required two surgeries. He was attempting to rehabilitate his way back onto the field at the start of fall practice, but a bothersome right hamstring prevented him from being completely cleared and ultimately required another treatment that is delaying his return.

Initially expected to serve as the backup for Montrell Johnson Jr., Webb’s injury opened the door for sophomore Jadan Baugh and redshirt senior Ja’Kobi Jackson to put together breakout campaigns in which they each averaged more than 5 yards per carry, compiling nearly 1,200 total yards rushing and 15 total touchdowns as a tandem. Webb was set to enter 2025 practice competing for the third-string job.
