WATCH: Florida Gators QB Tim Tebow scores TD, has up-and-down day in Eagles preseason opener

Sunday started and finished well enough for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Tim Tebow, but it was not so great in between during the team’s first preseason game of 2015 and his first action in nearly two years.

Tebow kicked off Sunday by leading the Eagles right down the field, completing his first four passes (all first downs) for 43 yards before throwing the ball away for an incomplete pass in the end zone. On his second series, Tebow was backed up on the Philadelphia 8-yard line but threw an 18-yard completion for his fifth first down of the game, following his second incompletion. He began the contest 5-for-7 for 61 yards.

From there, Tebow struggled behind the team’s increasingly exposed third- and fourth-string offensive line. He ended the game 1-for-6 for eight yards with three sacks for a loss of 28 yards, one of which was a nine-yard drop by fellow former Florida Gators player Earl Okine.

Tebow came through for the Eagles on his last series, however, taking a 2nd and 7 keeper all the way to the pylon for a touchdown. It was his first time crossing a goal line since Aug. 2013.

Takeaways: Tebow’s throwing motion looked much-improved and he showed off a soft touch during the team’s first two drives; however, he continues to look confused when reading defenses and often does not feel the rush, especially behind a porous offensive line like he had on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if Philadelphia gives him an opportunity behind its second-string line. Tebow still has a legitimate chance to make the Eagles’ 53-man roster based on all accounts out of Philadelphia. Head coach Chip Kelly likely has more planned for Tebow than being a third-string signal caller.

“I liked how Timmy threw it,” Kelly said after the game. “That’s the big concern with everybody coming in: ‘Has he really changed?’ And I think his sequencing is better. He got his feet underneath him. And when the guys ran the right routes and he had an opportunity to throw the football, I thought he threw the ball really well.”
