Former Florida Gators wide receiver Aubrey Hill, who returned to serve as an assistant coach at his alma mater several years ago, died Sunday, according to his current employer. Hill, 48, was battling cancer.

Aa Miami native who played at Florida from 1991-94, Hill was part of three SEC championship teams and totaled 18 touchdowns in his career. He returned as a graduate assistant under Steve Spurrier (1996-98) and assistant coach under Will Muschamp (2011) but was forced to leave the Gators in 2012 amid a scandal at his pervious stop, Miami.

“Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity without a doubt,” Hill said of his return to Florida as an assistant.

Receiving a show-cause penalty from the NCAA, Hill returned to coach his alma mater of Carol City High School. He was set to enter his fourth season as wide receivers coach at FIU.
