In one of the worst performances the Florida Gators have put together during a period of mind-boggling games over the last decade, No. 20 Florida turned the ball over four times while the homestanding LSU Tigers ran up and down the field on the way to a 49-42 victory. LSU entered the game unranked with six defensive starters out due to injury, leading UF to be a 12-point road favorite expected to pull off a simple victory.

Instead, the Tigers piled up 454 total yards, 321 of which came on the ground in one of the worst defensive efforts the Gators have efforted in years. Florida allowed the most rushing yards in program history to a single player as LSU running back Tyrion Davis-Price rumbled for 287 yards, breaking both programs’ records (defensive and offensive, respectively) in the process.

Redshirt junior Emory Jones and redshirt freshman Anthony Richardson each threw two interceptions as the Tigers held a 4-0 turnover margin. The Gators allowed 21 points off those miscues with the last pick coming on Florida’s final offensive series of the game. Richardson did replace Jones early in the second half to lead four straight touchdown drives, but his game-ending interception negated that effort.

The defeat sent the Gators to 4-3 on the season with losses in three of their last five games. Florida is also 2-6 against Power Five opponents dating back to its last loss to LSU on Dec. 12, 2020. Head coach Dan Mullen’s seat is definitely warming as defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is in the crosshairs.

Here’s what some former Gators had to say about Florida’s performance after the game.
