As new head coach Billy Napier continues to build his first staff with the Florida Gators, it appears he is snagging a key hire. Longtime LSU secondary coach Corey Raymond looks to be on his to joining the Florida staff as cornerbacks coach and assistant head coach of the defense, according to On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Not only has Raymond been on the LSU staff since 2012 largely as a defensive backs coach, he’s one of the nation’s top recruiters and arguably the best recruiter of defensive backs. Among the five-star prospects Raymond is credited with recruiting to the Tigers are Derek Stingley Jr., Kevin Tolliver II, Kristian Fulton and Jamal Adams, just to name a few.

Should the Raymond hire go through, his title would have him working alongside Patrick Toney, Florida’s new co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, in the secondary. Joining Napier from Louisiana, the expectation is that Toney will serve as the defense’s playcaller. He’s seen throughout the industry as one of the nation’s hottest up-and-coming assistants.

Napier would still hire a second co-defensive coordinator who would likely coach the defensive line or linebackers. That assistant would likely be targeted as another top-tier recruiter given Toney would have more in-game responsibilities.

Toney was one of four men announced as the first members of Napier’s staff this week. The Gators have hired additional staffers throughout the week but only two on-field assistants have been formally named at this time.
