The Florida Gators received one of the most notable National Signing Day commitments in program history Wednesday as five-star defensive back Kamari Wilson (Fort Pierce, FL) decided to continue his career just hours away in Gainesville. Wilson, the No. 5 player in the Sunshine State, pledged for Florida despite the program not appearing to be a significant factor in his recruitment as little as one week ago.

New Gators head coach Billy Napier and cornerbacks coach Corey Raymond made Wilson a priority, and in doing so, Florida was able to snipe him away from rival Georgia where he had long been projected as a signee.

The No. 28 overall player in the Class of 2022, according to the 247Sports Composite, Wilson (6-foot, 200 pounds) is one of the highest-rated prospects to sign with the Gators over the last five years and the highest-rated defensive back to do so since 2014. He slots in as the crown jewel of the class, one who will push for starting time right away as a true freshman.

Wilson’s commitment also serves as a salvo for Napier, who has promised to bring a dedicated, full-throated recruiting effort back to the program. The fact that his staff was able to reel Wilson into the program over just a matter of weeks should provide significant optimism of what will be possible not only in 2023 but perhaps as soon as February’s traditional National Signing Day.
