Since decommitting from Miami in June, it has long been expected that three-star safety Randy Russell (Opa Locka, FL) would flip to the Florida Gators. That became official on Saturday when Russell gave Florida a verbal pledge one day after participating in Friday Night Lights.
“It is with great thought, many visits, heartfelt talks along with prayer that I am announcing my verbal commitment to the University of Florida! … #GO GATORS,” he wrote on Twitter.
Though Russell (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) is not highly rated, he is a well-regarded prospect with an extensive offer list. He chose to commit to UF on Saturday while celebrating his birthday in Gainesville, Florida.
Russell becomes the 11th commitment (seventh with a three-star rating) to join the Gators’ Class of 2018, which is now ranked 30th nationally following a sharp rise via four commitments this past week.
