Though National Signing Day has come and gone, it looks like the Florida Gators will add another commitment to their 2011 recruiting class. Four-star quarterback Jacoby Brissett (West Palm Beach, FL) of Dwyer High School will commit to Florida this evening, according to a source who spoke with the Palm Beach Post.

With five-star QB Jeff Driskel (Oviedo, FL) already in the fold as an early enrollee, offensive coordinator/QB coach Charlie Weis made a strong push to get a commitment out of Brissett almost immediately when he took the job in January.

After meeting the student-athlete, Weis called head coach Will Mushcamp to request a scholarship offer for Brissett. Muschamp quickly granted one even though the player had previously only been offered a greyshirt by former head coach Urban Meyer.

Miami (FL) and Wisconsin were also strongly considered by Brissett.

Though Driskel is the consensus No. 1 QB in the 2011 class, Brissett is ranked No. 5 by Rivals and No. 9 by Scout. ESPNU lists him as a three-star player and the No. 25 QB in the country. He has said on numerous occasions that he is not scared of competition and is confident he will eventually win a starting job at whatever college he chooses.

Brissett will officially announce his decision at his Dwyer basketball game Friday night.

A two-sport athlete, he has also given an indication that he would like to pursue basketball at a collegiate level. Whether or not Gators head basketball coach Billy Donovan will provide him with that opportunity remains to be seen.

Committing to Florida, he joins three former Dwyer teammates who joined the Gators in 2010 – safety Matt Elam, tight end Gerald Christian and wide receiver Robert Clark.

With Brissett’s signing, it is almost a certainty that redshirt freshman QB/tight end Jordan Reed will permanently switch to TE and freshman QB Trey Burton will change positions, too. Muschamp noted on Wednesday that Burton can play either defensive back or a hybrid fullback/QB role on offense. The status of freshman QB Tyler Murphy has not been discussed, though the player has said he only wants to be a signal-caller.

UPDATE: Since the Post first reported Brissett’s decision, The Gainesville Sun has confirmed it via sources of their own. However, the Associated Press‘s Tim Reynolds has reported via Twitter that he is hearing Brissett actually told two different schools that they will receive his commitment. Additionally, the Post has noted that Brissett will not sign or send in his Letter of Intent Friday no matter which program he commits to. OGGOA will keep you updated on this story as it progresses.

This will be a fantastic get. Brantley is not going to sleep well tonight thats for sure.

  4. Ken says:

Great get for the Gators, I have to wonder if they plan on redshirting him. Between Brantley, Driskel and Brissett, there are only snaps that can be taken. What position does he play in Basketball? How tall is he? We are going to need some new big men next year to go with all of our guards.

He is not 6’10” and 260 Ken and that is what Billy needs down low.

      • Ken says:

Very nice! I am sure Billy D will give him an opportunity then. Even if he is just on the practice team, he already has football scholly so no need to spend BBall one on him.

Maggit and Grant could have started now probably. Maggit instead leaves his family and friends to go to the Vols. This kid is coming when he likley could start for the Canes at home. Dont get me wrong, I am excited to have him if he does in fact sign, this is just the strangest recruiting season I have ever seen.

    Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!! Driskel + Brisset! 😀

This whole process has been like a rollercoaster. Im excited that brissett might sign with the gators. The kid is the real deal and he seems to be mad confident in his skills. He is willing to fight for the starting job instead of starting right away in other schools. If he indeed signs, we need to congratulate charlie weis, cause his the one that saw real talent in him. Cant wait for the season

Rex Grossman and brock berlin, john brantley and cam newton, driskel and brissett….figure it out, it doesnt work

    • dlatham21 says:

      tebow and leak??????

    • Ken says:

Let’s see…Newton and Tebow won the heisman, Grossman should have won it but got robbed. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Driskel at or near the top of the Heisman list in the next couple of years.

      What exactly doesn’t work?

    • DGLgatorfan says:

Not sure what point you’re trying to make . Cam newton was kicked off the team but became a great qb not like they both stunk it up and who knows what brantley will do nxt seasons. As far as grossman and berlin, grossman was a good sec qb during his gator career. Every yr Usc try to bring in the top qb or top two qbs in california which they did despite having barkely. I dont understand what doesnt work having depth at qb is the smartest thing a team can do.

  9. npgator says:

    Slim – it will work!

  10. Matt says:

First someone mentioned the basket ball team needing a 6’10” guy. I agree and I saw on a recruiting site that Florida has offered a 6’10” 280lbs Center from South Fl. for 2012. Only listed as a 3 star but he is only a Jr. With regards to getting this guy.

With regards to football. I also agree that these two QB’s will push each other. One will win the back-up role and the other will red-shirt. I would think Driskel will get it for no other reason than he will have time under center this spring. If Driskel lives up to the hype and the obvious talent, see You Tube videos, then he may very well be gone as a junior and that leaves two years for Brissett. Even if Driskel stays for one year then Brissett could do what Cam should have done in the only true Orange and Blue and that is have an all world Senior season at Florida and still be a first round draft pick! Just don’t take anyone elses computer!!!!

  11. UF Alum says:

WTF is the point of announcing if you aren’t sure enough to be able to man up and sign the LOI. Come on.

  12. Andrew says:

I have a bad feeling about these rumors.

    • g8ter27 says:

I am having that feeling too. it doesn’t make sense. I had the same feeling about signing day and was right on except for Roberson signing with us…man I hope I am wrong but Jenkins would be a nice get.

  13. JW says:

    It’s “The Decision” part 2!!

  14. John S. says:

    Woah…cross your fingers.

  15. Mr2Bits says:

Adam : If Brissett does sign, any idea which way this will push Jenkins? Seems like with the anti-grey stance Machen took, we are out of schollys after Brissett’s pen hits the paper.

  16. Bert Mills says:

    Jenkins/Brissett…come join the Gator Nation!!!!!!!

  17. zurbo says:

this makes no sense to me, but ill take it!

  18. Swampbabe says:

These kids make me nutsy. How do you announce that you’re announcing then still be so unsure about what you’re going to announce that you announce to two different schools then take it all back??? This doesn’t feel good… at all.

  19. Gator Pat says:

    Dudes, 32 touchdowns vs. 1 interception… Wow!
