Florida Gators at 2014 NFL Combine: Monday

By Adam Silverstein
February 24, 2014

For the fifth-straight year, OnlyGators.com continues our coverage of the eight former Florida Gators participating in the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine (National Invitational Camp) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.

The event, which is held for six days from Feb. 19-25, consists of more than 300 players being put through a series of drills, tests and interviews while more than 600 NFL personnel in attendance (including coaching staffs, executives, player personnel and medical staffs) look on and evaluate each of them. It amounts to a major job interview for these athletes to participate in ahead of the start of the 2014 NFL Draft on May 8.

Defensive tackle Dominique Easley (Group: 7 | Camp: DL09) and linebacker Ronald Powell* (Group: 9 | Camp: LB23) concluded their combine experience on Monday with the full workout, though Powell is the only one who participated as Easley is still rehabilitating from his ACL injury.

Defensive backs Loucheiz Purifoy* (Group: 11 | Camp: DB44), Marcus Roberson* (Group: 11 | Camp: DB48) and Jaylen Watkins (Group: 11 | Camp: DB58) competed in the bench press on Monday while also undergoing psychological testing, attending an NFLPA meeting and doing team interviews. They will complete the combine with the full workout on Tuesday; all three players are expected to participate.

Check out Monday’s results from the 2014 NFL Combine…after the break!

Defensive tackle Dominique Easley (Group: 7 | Camp: DL09)
Height: 6’2″ | Weight: 288 lbs.
Arm length: 32 7/8″ | Hand size: 9 3/4″

Bench press: 26 reps of 225 lbs.
Combine workout: Did not participate (ACL)

Overview: A first-round caliber talent who was on his way to an incredible season, Easley is known for having an exceptionally quick first step, high motor and top-notch athleticism. He was off to a hot start in 2013 with the three game he started (before tearing his right ACL and medial meniscus in practice) standing out as three of the best performances of his career. The biggest concern with Easley is his injury history as he also tore his left ACL during his freshman season. Easley is explosive enough to affect the quarterback but also stout enough to stop the run. His quickness is his greatest asset, and he hopes to prove that he has not lost that attribute leading up to the draft.
Strengths: Motor, quickness, athleticism, hands, feet, explosion, pursuit, leadership
Weaknesses: Durability, size, arms, inability to play nose tackle, perceived immaturity

Linebacker Ronald Powell* (Group: 9 | Camp: LB23)
Height: 6’3″ | Weight: 237 lbs.
Arm length: 32 1/2″ | Hand size: 9 3/8″

Bench press: 21 reps of 225 lbs.
40-yard dash: 4.65 seconds (fourth-fastest)
Three-cone drill: Did not participate
20-yard shuttle: Did not participate
Vertical jump: 35.5 inches
Broad jump: 114.0 inches (T-sixth-shortest)

Overview: The No. 1 overall recruit in his class, Powell failed to live up to expectations in college mostly due to a pair of consecutive ACL injuries that sidelined him for the entire 2012 season. He is nevertheless a physical, athletic and versatile pass rusher who can play both defensive end and outside “Buck” linebacker. Powell left school with a year of eligibility remaining. Scouts believe he needs to dedicate himself to the game more and grade him as a developmental prospect who may need at least a full season before he can see any major time on an NFL field.
Strengths: Size, athleticism, agility, power, hands, hips, potential
Weaknesses: Consistency, instincts, intensity, refinement, experience

Defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy* (Group: 11 | Camp: DB44)
Height: 5’11” | Weight: 190 lbs.
Arm length: 32 3/4″ | Hand size: 8 1/2″

Bench press: 6 reps of 225 lbs. (fewest)

Player overview and workout figures will be added on Tuesday.

Defensive back Marcus Roberson* (Group: 11 | Camp: DB48)
Height: 6’0″ | Weight: 191 lbs.
Arm length: 31″ | Hand size: 9 1/4″

Bench press: 8 reps of 225 lbs. (tied: second-fewest)

Player overview and workout figures will be added on Tuesday.

Defensive back Jaylen Watkins (Group: 11 | Camp: DB58)
Height: 5’11” | Weight: 194 lbs.

    • cline says:

4.44 40, I hope he gets drafted before Roberson and Purifoy. What a great combine for him and he is ailing.

always liked his heart out there on the field. Gator Great!

  2. Will W says:

If VH3 was elgible, we would probably have 4 CBs drafted. Say what you will about Coach Champ, he gets these DBs ready to play at the next level.
